Dec 15, Linny rated it really liked it Shelves: Charles Sovek wrote a guide to oil painting that supposedly is influenced by Nicolaides’ approach. This book was a great read! The other thing I appreciate about the blind contour, is that I think again it is important to develop an art memory which I think is what blind contour is all about and I could very well be wrong.

A lot of times I try to compensate by going over a line over and over or drawing a very sketchy line and slowly building the line I want but this feels like a crutch and I don’t like the result. I have spent a lot of time focused on the crisp, controlled line and form, carefully trying to copy without seeing.

So at the end of this week I just have a few thoughts about what I’ve done so far. They stupidly thought they could start over from scratch, do everything differently, and come up with new and better art. Some students may want to perfect in, say, proportion, form modeling, or edge, etc. Ok, that book just hit my list of books to never buy!

The feeling that I have is that I have a good eye but that my hand struggles to keep up. Contour drawing and gesture drawing are two cornerstones of Life Drawing and this book teaches these things.


I have been drawing since I can remember, and I have been seriously studying art for the last five plus nicolaaides. Jan 13, Andrew Klem rated it it was amazing. This book helped in all sorts of ways to do quality nnicolaides with excellent results. Betty Edwards used a pure blind contour drawing exercise where you don’t look at the drawing at all.

Even an inanimate object is full of energy as the atoms race around. Section one wanted us to put ourselves in the models shoes and observe life as it is. My life drawing teacher had us do two minute blind contour gesture drawings to use as warmups, and I think that’s all it’s good for.
